If there is a desert plant more majestic in full swing than the ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens), then I have yet to discover it. Ocotillo, also known as candlewood and the Devil's coach whip, produces leaves in accordance with rain cycles and likes to live in well-drained rocky soil like alluvial fans. A mature ocotillo may grow to 20 feet tall and have 75 stalks. Clusters of red flowers appear at the tips of the branches in the spring.
