No, it ain't time for Raven Jake's true confessions. About three weeks back, I was visitin' my friend Tecopa Tom and, along with Jane and a young musician friend of ours, Chris Caplan, we made our way up to Death Valley Junction to check out the fabled Amargosa Opera House.
Back in the late '60s, a dancer named Marta Becket found an abandoned social hall out in Death Valley and she transformed it into an opera house where she could dance and perform. To guarantee a full house, she painted all of the walls with murals, and I assure you that she's as good a painter as she is a dancer, and I ain't seen her dance.
Marta is 85 now and suffered a fall recently that keeps her from going on point, but her friend Sandy Scheller is keeping the doors open with performances
on Saturdays and Sundays. The show, "If These Walls Could Talk," is a tribute to Becket's work, combines dance and mime and little vignettes, and it's just a lovely way to spend a couple hours. It's also a really good cause to support - spend the night if you have the time.
