Help out a city guy. What does, "Soon as the webs cleared his toes" mean..? What webs? Thanks!

Sorry there, John - I've had about three hummies in as many weeks. Nothing esoteric about "webs" - I'm just talkin' about the cobwebs that pervade the skylights in the studio where I've been working. The darned things are snaggy and sticky, and while the hummingbirds seem to be alright with detangling their wings, they can't seem to get the feet.
