Folks, it's with a heavy heart that I must say goodbye to a dear friend, Don Reed, who died unexpectedly last weekend. Funeral services will be held in Cathedral City on Thurs and Fri. He had been complaining of intermittent back pain through the summer. When he finally had blood work done a little over 3 weeks ago, it was discovered that he had advanced spinal cancer and was given 6 mos - 2 years to live, depending on whether he wanted to try chemo. Don was 76 and had other health issues and he declined, opting instead for hospice care. The end was very swift, and his suffering was minimal. Jane and I will miss him very much.
Don was a cranky old guy with a sharp wit who loved his cats; his band, The Canyon Classics; and the desert, not necessarily in that order. He was a fierce friend and an even fiercer proofreader. He was a terrific writer who didn't do it often enough. Down below, at Cabot's in 2009, he's the guy in the Hawaiian shirt, which was pretty much his year-round uniform. Rest in peace, Don.
